Meet Volunteering
Summer League swim teams rely heavily on our parents to run the meets. It takes more than 25 individuals for a swim meet to run effectively. Therefore, each family on our team is required to volunteer each meet. Some positions require certification or training in May and June. Look for clinics and training sessions on our website. We are here to help you find the right position to suit your strengths. It does NOT have to be stressful. If you are unfamiliar with any of the following positions, someone will teach you.
All Scorers, Starters, and Stroke and Turn officials must attend the SSL clinics each year to be certified in the league. We are required to have all official positions filled for each meet or the meet will not run. Please consider becoming an official or scorer. All clinics will be held via Zoom in May and June.
We need the following volunteer positions at every meet, depending either home or away:
Announcer - (home meets only)
Announces individual events. Works closely with the starter to keep the meet running smoothly.
Starter – 1 per home meet CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Advise swimmers at the start of each race as to type of stroke and distance of race; ensure swimmers and timers move to the appropriate end of the pool to start each race.
Referee – 1 per home meet CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Head Official; must have prior stroke and turn experience
Stroke and Turn Judge – at least 2 per home or away meet, preferably 2 per half, 4 in total. CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Observe swimmers starts, stroke and turns.
Scorers – 3 for home meets, 2 for away meets TRAINING REQUIRED
Prepare event cards prior to the meet. Record event results during the meets. Assign and record total team points.
Timers - 1 per lane/per meet, home and away.
Use stopwatch to time swimmers in each event and report time to the Head Timer.
Head Timer – 1 per home meet
The Head Timer will collect and record the times for each swimmer from the timers in each lane after the event is completed.
Runners – 1 per home meet
Provide and collect head timer and place judge cards for each event. Return cards to officials area.
Clerk of Course – 1 per home meet
Verify names and lane assignments on timer cards for each event. Works with Ready Bench. Ensures that swimmers are in proper lanes for start of events
Ready Bench – 2 per meet, home and away
Organizes swimmers in proper order according to event number and lane. 1 person finds the swimmers and sends to ready bench, 1 person organizes the swimmers in proper event/lane on benches, 1 person walks the little ones to their proper lanes for all races including relays.
Place Judge – 1 per meet, home and away
Records the order of finish of swimmers he/she observes in each lane for each event, i.e. which lane number finishes first, second, third, etc.
50/50 Raffle Ticket Seller – 1 per home meet
Sell 50/50 tickets during home meets. Proceeds go to swim team.
Parking Lot Attendant – 1 per home meet
Direct all cars to park as closely, but safely in parking lot. No parking in restricted wet areas. Parking not allowed on Old Possum Park Rd.
Snack Bar - 2-4 per home meet
Help set-up concession stand with canopy, tables, coolers and organize items. The Grill Master focuses strictly to the grill. Clean-up is required. You may sign up for first half or second half of the meet. You won't miss your child's event as everyone looks out to cover for you as you cheer for your swimmer.
Grill Master - 1 per home meet
Sets up grills and cooks all food for home meet snack bar. Can be divided between two people; 1st half and 2nd half of the meet. Clean up area is required.
